“I remember the way I felt when I inhaled the vapor of my first smoke free cigarette – it was a mix of freedom and confidence. I was no longer chained to the dirty, ash-ridden butts of standard cigarettes. My breath smelled sweet and there wasn’t that smoky odor lingering around me. But still, I felt embarrassed and a little scared about how people would react.”
Have you had any similar thoughts? This is a common feeling and you are not alone!
Federal and state governments have made smoking traditional cigarettes illegal in most public places; smokers can hardly go outside without getting dirty looks. On the other hand, electronic cigarettes aren’t held under the same scrutiny, and can be enjoyed almost anywhere, including indoors and in restaurants. However, there still seems to be a stigma attached with vaping in public. Some vapers are choosing to remain silent and enjoy their smoke free cigarette in solidarity. Others are working to release the stigma and help mainstream these fairly new gadgets.
The Public Perception
Smoke free cigarettes continue to grow in popularity, but that doesn’t mean public perception has changed. When a nonsmoker sees a plume of vapor, they assume it’s coming from a traditional cigarette. They may complain to someone else or actually confront you, but all you have to remember is that you’re not doing anything wrong. Some businesses may not understand that you are enjoying a vapor cigarette and ask you to stop, but it’s most likely perfectly legal. In fact, you’re making the world a better place.
Getting Over Embarrassment
People may initially fear taking their vapor cigarette out in public, and instead steal away a few puffs in the car or the bathroom at work. As you become more comfortable, you’ll begin to realize that there is no reason for embarrassment. It’s your choice and not theirs. It makes you feel good and when it comes right down to it, that’s the most important thing. So vape with pride!
There is going to be a time when you’re faced with a choice. You could head outside with the smokers and your vapor cigarette as usual, or you can stay inside where it’s comfortable, and avoid the second hand smoke. This time, you stay inside… As you watch the smokers leave, suddenly your confidence surges and instead of joining them, you pull out your Vapor Couture and take a nice long drag. The people look at you and something strange happens. Instead of confronting you for smoking, they begin to ask you questions. “How does it feel? Is it heavy? What does it taste like?” Instead of a pariah, you become the focus of the conversation and you end up educating people instead of defending yourself.
How great does that feel?
